Menu Favorites: All pastries! They also design amazing Wedding cakes.

Carrara Pastries creates delicious & decadent “fine Italian pastries”. The Carrara family is from Lucca, Northern Italy. They opened their business in December 2011. Discovering this place a week ago made me thankful to know that I have a scrumptious, bite of N. Italy in my own backyard. This past week I visited the pastry shop four times. I’ve eaten over seven of their delicious desserts. Their large display refrigerators allow you to view the creations. All pastries displayed have a description of the main ingredients -this makes selection easier, for example: chantilly cream, hazelnut, chocolate filling, strawberries etc. Staff is also super friendly & helpful they will assist you when needed.

Tip: Preorder for a special occasion, although they have tons of daily, fresh pastries & cakes. Difference between a cake & a pastryPastry is made from flour a little water & butter/shortening oil & sometimes sugar & primarily used to encase savory foods. Sometimes a pastry can stand alone like the “Profiterol” (a croccante hazelnut base with bigné filled with zabaione cream, topped with fine Italian chocolate glaze). A cake is a stand-alone dessert which along with butter/shortening oil & flour also contains a mild raising agents eggs & some form of liquid usually milk cake are usually turned out to cool before being iced, frosted or decorated. Cake is sometimes called a pastry.

Price: Variety of sizes to fit your budget.

Carniceria Y Mercado La Plaza, Fillmore CA

Menu Favorites: Weekend “Pollo Asado” Special! Variety of Aguas Frescas such as: cucumber, strawberry, jamaica, horchata, melon & tamarindo.

“La Placita” is a grocery store & meat shop with an indoor food counter & a small dining area. You can order from a large refreshing, selection of homemade fruit drinks. I recommend the cucumber agua fresca for the hint of cucumber is exquisite and the fruit flavor is not overbearing. My favorite meal to order is the Pollo Asado Combo which is a weekend special. This special consists of a whole savory, grilled chicken with rice & beans, corn tortillas, grilled jalapeños & onions. The chicken tastes of lemon & salt. If the taste is too salty for you I recommend squeezing a fresh lemon on it. The meal easily feeds three adults. Chicken wings are not included unless you ask for them. Ask the cook to include the wings they are more than happy to comply.

Tip: The grill chicken special is only on the Saturday & Sunday. “La Placita” usually sells out by 3pm so get there early. Reminder -Ask for the chicken wings for they are not included. Visit their salsa & agua frescas bar inside the store. The fruit drinks are made fresh daily best to order them after 11am this gives the sugar time to settle & you can taste more of the fruit juice. Located at the corner of A Street & West Ventura Street (Hwy 126) across from Shell gas station & Catholic church.

Price: Bargain the Pollo Asado Combo is around $13.

Ay! Chihuahua, Fillmore CA

Phone: (805) 524.4642 Address: 1141 West Ventura Street Fillmore CA, 93015

Menu Favorites: Tacos, Burritos, Chile Relleno & Homemade Salsas. Menudo is a HUGE favorite dish during the weekend. The guacamole made with ripe avocados, chile, cilantro, onions, a hint of salt & lime – es muy sabroso!

Ay! Chihuahua has been a lifesaver on those nights when you just run out of time to fix dinner. “Ay! Chi” (as we call this restaurant at our house) serves a variety of traditional Mexican dishes. When I’m extra hungry my order consists of meat tacos or a meat burrito. I order the rice, bean & cactus or “nopalitos” plate when I’m not that hungry. You can have the nopalitos with or without egg. I ask for the bell pepper, onions, cilantro & no salt. Their Chile Relleno served in a corn tortilla -“A la carte”, is always savory, spicy & yummy. Service is always with a genuine smile & their salsa bar is lush, well-tended & clean.

Tip: Call-In Order if you are in a hurry – especially on weekends because the restaurant gets packed. Careful to not fill up with the tasty, chips, salsa & guacamole. Be sure to check the “Daily Specials” that are written & posted to the left of the salsa bar. Remember to leave a tip! The styrofoam “Tip Cup” is located to the right of the drink machine – far to left of the cashier.

Hozy’s also offers an array of Omelets such as: Denver made with ham, onions, peppers & your choice of cheese – cheddar, jack, swiss or American. My favorite is the Veggie made with onions, mushrooms, broccoli, tomatoes & cheddar cheese.

I have yet to experienced lunch or dinner at Hozy’s Grill. They offer lunch specials so check the chalkboard as you walk in or ask your server. Chef’s Dinner Specials are also available.

Hozy’s Grill has a wine room with an exceptional wine selection. The interior decor of bright-colored walls, industrial furniture finishings & fresh-cut flowers is worth mentioning. The restaurant interior is a ray of sunshine within the hidden, industrial location.
